West Facing Wall

A "kapkap" is a distinctive Solomon Island circular turtle and clam-shell head ornament.  Painted on the west facing wall of a classroom building of the King George Sixth Secondary School in Honiara, Solomon Islands, this kapkap mural was likely initiated by expatriate teachers during the 1970s. The same motif was printed, curiously upside down, in a publication called Images and Islands: Grassroots Art of the Solomon Islands in 1978, the year of Solomon Island Independence.
