Unbound (2022)

A boxed set of forty-eight small ‘unbound’ visual booklets from which a suite of twenty-five A4, limited edition, archival pigment prints were exhibited at Skar Image Lab, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.

This intimate project tracks over several months an ‘unbound’ distracted gaze, unsettled by a pandemic world. Accepting the difficulty of focusing on anything in particular, the process of making these works relinquished any attempt at specificity and instead roamed freely across observational glimpses, fragments of traced shadows, and the simple flow of marks and spontaneous colours. Time is a contributing element in that the work emerged during lock-downs in which there were un-pressured hours to make. These images folded into small notebooks can be read as a fluid, changeable record of a peculiar and particular moment.
